A common request amongst the artillery men of the German Army during World War Two was for lighter artillery pieces without a reduction in performance. In March 1942 these requests were heard; the requirement was met by the simple combination of the trail of the 7.5cm PaK40 Anti-tank gun and the barrel and recoil system of the 10.5cm leFH18M howitzer.

However, some minor modifications were made in order for combination to function correctly. First, the wheels of the 7.5cm PaK40 trail proved problematic due to their size; when the gun was set to a high elevation, the breech mechanism was too close to the ground to allow the gun to fully recoil when fired. This glitch was solves by fitting larger diameter wheels with solid rubber tires. The handwheels for elevation and traversing the gun were on the same side of the carriage as a tradition anti-tank gun which meant the procedure for sighting and laying the gun had to be modified slightly. Finally, a muzzle brake was added.
